ncurses future

Just a suggestion (note I sent you this privately, not on any list, but you
may make the idea your own and use it if it suits you) :

What if Thomas Dickey did not release ncurses-x.y releases, but (GPL) diffs
against ncurses-1.9.9g to produce (let's call it so) gcurses-x.y.

So ncurses-1.9.9g is clearly a work of esr and friends and the gcurses-x.y.diff
is clearly a work of the rest of the world. Gradually maybe all the unfree
ncurses-1.9.9g parts would be replaced.
